چکیده:

In this study, improving the interfacial adhesion of epoxy / ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (UHMWPE) composites by grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on the surface of the fiber has been investigated. For grafting process, the design of experiments was used and two factors, monomer concentration and reaction time, were selected as the process variables. The ATR-IR test has been carried out to approve the presence of GMA groups on the surface of UHMWPE fibers. In order to measure the interfacial adhesion of fibers with matrix the pull-out test was used. Also, the unidirectional composites of epoxy /UHMWPE fiber were prepared to evaluate the effect of surface modification on the mechanical properties of these composites. Meanwhile, all fracture surfaces of tensile and bending test samples was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results of grafting process demonstrated that the grafting percent increased by increasing the monomer concentration and reaction time. However, the effect of monomer concentration on grafting percentage was clearly greater than the reaction time. In addition, a quantitative relation between grafting percentage and two factors, monomer concentration and reaction time were obtained by using the Minitab software. The pull-out test results showed that the Interfacial Shear Strength (IFSS) of treated fibers were improved. The IFSS of the fibers with 11%, 25% and 40% GMA grafted, was improved to 126%, 195% and 220% respectively.
